Electoral Systems and Their Impacts on the Political System examines how electoral rules shape party systems, executive formation, representation, and political behavior. The training explores major electoral models including First-Past-The-Post (FPTP), Two-Round System (TRS), Alternative Vote (AV), Proportional Representation (PR), Party Block Vote, and Mixed Systems (MMP & Parallel).
Through comparative analysis of the United States of America, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia, the session highlights how majoritarian systems emphasize competition and decisive outcomes, while proportional and consensus-based systems promote inclusion, coalition-building, and negotiation.
The course also explains key concepts such as constituency design, vote counting formulas, thresholds, representation gaps, referendum vs. election processes, and how electoral systems influence democratic stability and accountability.
