Highlights

Who We Are
Established in 2011, the Institute for Peace and Social Justice (IPSJ) is an independent, rights-based, policy and action-oriented institution working to advance federal democracy, human rights, and inclusive governance in Myanmar. Based in Thailand, IPSJ operates as a strategic research and policy hub, convening and facilitating dialogue among civil society, grassroots actors, and emerging governance structures. Through applied research and technical support, IPSJ helps translate democratic principles into practical, locally owned solutions.
WHY IPSJ MATTERS
Myanmar’s democratic transition requires more than advocacy or humanitarian response—it needs trusted spaces for dialogue, credible policy solutions, and institutions capable of managing diversity, conflict, and shared resources. IPSJ fills a strategic gap by operating at the intersection of civic, political, ethnic, and academic spheres. As an independent and non-partisan convener, IPSJ facilitates sensitive dialogue and governance design processes that few organizations can undertake, translating complex federal and democratic principles into implementable solutions grounded in local realities.

WHAT WE DO
IPSJ advances Myanmar’s federal democratic transition through applied research, inclusive dialogue, and targeted technical support. Our work strengthens democratic institutions, upholds human rights and the rule of law, and promotes peaceful conflict transformation. We focus on federalism and local governance, constitutional and judicial reform, natural resource and climate governance, and community resilience—connecting grassroots realities with policy reform to support just, peaceful, and inclusive outcomes.
Our Approach – Progressive Development
IPSJ’s work is guided by an approach of Progressive Development—a step-by-step, participatory pathway toward lasting peace and democracy. We believe meaningful change must emerge through locally owned processes that build trust, capacity, and accountable institutions over time. Our approach integrates three interlinked priorities: restoring democratic governance and human rights, cultivating a culture of dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, and advancing equitable systems for natural resource governance and climate resilience within a federal framework.
